WALKING/HIKING AROUND PORT ALBERNI
If you feel the need to go for a walk/hike and see some of the beauty surrounding Port Alberni, a popular choice is the CAMERON LAKE RAILWAY TRESTLE WALK-EAST SIDE. This walk has been described as moderate and the trail to the trestles is level and easy-walking. It is the walking on the actual trestles that are the fun part! The first trestle is quite soon into the walk, trestles #2 and #3 are close to each other and have been described as a "bit sketchy" to cross. There is some wood rotted away in places so the advice is to walk slightly off-center and OVER the big beams. Trestle #4 is higher but in better condition with trestle #5 being the highest. May not be suitable for kids or pets. If unsure of the trestles, just walk the trail and trestle #1 to give you a view of the scenery. There is a 190 m. of elevation gain.
Another popular walk and easier than the Cameron Lake Railway Trestle Walk-East Side is the CAMERON LAKE RAILWAY TRESTLE WALK-WEST-SIDE. This walk is 7.7 km's. that can be done under 2 hours. This trail is the longest walking trail in the area and the easiest. The trail starts at the west end of Cameron Lake and follows the logging road along the north side of the lake. It is popular for its bird watching, running/walking trails, beach access, views, lake, and forest. It is open year-round. The west-side trails are popular and can be busy at certain times of the day. Dogs are accepted but must be on a leash.
ROGER'S CREEK NATURE TRAIL & BEAR DEN TRAIL LOOP is another easy walk that will take about an hour. It is approximately 2.5 km's with an elevation gain of 426 ft. and is near the Alberni-Clayoquot area. It is a popular trail for walking, hiking and running. The trail is mainly in the trees, partially through new growth and along a logging road. Start your hike to the left and find the Bavarian beer garden. At the Loon Lake bridge sign, follow the trail down to the creek for a spot to cool down and have lunch. You can also continue onto Burde pond.
Lastly, when you are downtown Port Alberni, do take a stroll around HARBOUR QUAY which is the scenic part of town with shops and cafes located by the spectacular Alberni Inlet....have some coffee, a bite to eat and watch all the activity on the land and water.
The staff at the BEST WESTERN BARCLAY HOTEL are looking forward to seeing you in Port Alberni to enjoy all that the town has to offer, from shopping, strolling, hiking and eating. The BEST WESTERN BARCLAY HOTEL welcomes you to their hotel which has a convenient location, comfortable accommodation and quality amenities.
