Thunder in the Alberni Valley, Aug 10-11

“It’s all about the smoke and the noise”, say spectators, and that’s certainly the primary sensory input at the Thunder in the Alberni Valley drag racing competition—in addition to the flash of souped-up dragsters screaming past your field of vision. Taking place at the at the Port Alberni Regional Airport on the longest drag strip on Vancouver Island, it’s a 2-day extravaganza of races, burnouts and awesome automobiles.

Salmon Festival and Derby, Aug. 30 - Sept. 2

Now in it’s 42nd year, the Port Alberni Salmon Festival is one of our city’s most beloved annual events. More than just a fishing derby, the Salmon Fest features live entertainment, activities, an artisans market and much more. Although its organizers had a rocky start in organizing this year’s fest because of increasing costs, generous local support ultimately helped them make it happen, much to the relief of the thousands of salmon lovers who visit the fest every year.

Port Alberni Toy Run, Sept. 14

When you hear the fearsome growl of a thousand motorcycles ripping down the road, you probably don’t associate the sound with teddy bears and Barbie dolls. But at the Port Alberni Toy run, which brings together more than 1200 motorcyclists for a ride to benefit kids in need, that’s exactly what these leather-clad speedsters will be carrying. The ride begins at Little Qualicum Falls and finishes at Glenwood Centre where there will be bike games, a show & shine competition and fun activities for the whole family including contests, clowns and face painting.
